At Grimshaw & Harring, every lawyer is considered a valued member of the firm and is expected to meet the highest of professional standards. Our attorneys are evaluated not only based upon productivity in terms of hours billed, but also on quality of work product, client development, client satisfaction, and overall contributions to the firm. We expect our attorneys to mentor and train other lawyers, provide support to one another on difficult or time-consuming projects to ensure a quality product, develop specialized knowledge in their practice areas, add to the firm as a business enterprise, and make a difference in the community. We have a diverse group of attorneys with different strengths and interests that make Grimshaw & Harring successful, and we come together to produce an exceptional product for our clients.

Attorney Positions

Recruiting at Grimshaw & Harring starts locally. While we have a long standing Summer Clerk program, we do not hire a new class of attorneys each year. Rather, we hire new associates only after assessing our long term needs. We take pride in the fact that we have grown thoughtfully over the last fifteen years, hiring when necessary to achieve a long term growth plan, rather than simply to grow larger. Our low attrition rate is evidence that each attorney is hired with the intent that the fit will be long term. Please direct all inquiries to Paul J. Hanley.

** There are no attorney positions available at this time.
Lateral hires will be considered on a case-by-case basis. **

Administrative and Staff Positions

Our mission is to achieve success for our clients. To help us make this happen, we understand it is imperative to have an exemplary support staff. For our 24 attorneys, we employ five paralegals, seven legal assistants, and an administrative staff of six more. Most of our staff members have been with us for years, with more than half crossing the ten year mark. We believe in our family, and should we need to add to it, we will post available positions here.

** There are no staff positions available at this time. **

Our water law clients include water and metropolitan districts, water and wastewater authorities (comprised of numerous water districts and metropolitan districts), real estate developers, ranchers, irrigators, reservoir companies, irrigation companies and golf course developers. Our water lawyers have practiced in this specialty area of the law since 1970, securing dozens of complex decrees for the water supply plans of numerous metropolitan districts throughout Colorado, for municipalities such as the Town of Vail and the City of Grand Junction, for Colorado’s largest irrigation company, for numerous real estate developers, for new and established ski resorts and golf courses, and for individual property owners. In addition, we have evaluated water rights, assisted clients in the purchase or transfer of water rights, helped to obtain well permits, and we have been involved in countless cases and appeals to protect our clients’ water rights.

Presently, our water lawyers are pursuing decrees for complicated augmentation plans for the Denver Technological Center and other Southeast Denver Metropolitan area special districts. They represent the Douglas County Water Resource Authority in implementing a conjunctive use project that enjoys unprecedented West Slope/East Slope/Denver Water Board/State Engineer cooperation, to augment the water supplies of water districts and metropolitan districts in Douglas County. They also represent the Arapahoe County Water and Wastewater Authority, which presently provides water and wastewater services to a significant part of the population of Arapahoe County.

Our water lawyers have taught water law and they speak on water law. For years, Wayne Schroeder has annually updated a summary of Colorado water law that he previously authored in Chapter 76, Krendl, 2A Colorado Methods of Practice (4th ed. West, 1998 & Supp. 2002), and a similar summary of Colorado water law that appears in Clark, Waters and Water Rights, Colorado Water Law (D. Beck ed. 1991).

Representing policyholders with insurance questions has long been a focus of our litigation attorneys and an area in which they have considerable expertise. Many of our numerous precedent-setting cases have established the rights of individuals, local governments, and businesses (ranging from multi-national conglomerates to small “mom” and “pop” gasoline-dispensing convenience stores) to recover from their insurance companies. Our attorneys have experience in a broad range of insurance coverage issues, from clients facing damages from a single occurrence, like the collapse of a wastewater treatment plant’s 80 foot high filtering tower or a spontaneous bodily injury, to claims spanning multiple coverage periods, such as progressive construction defects and deterioration, extensive groundwater contamination or asbestos exposure, and earth movement or structural failure. Equally critical is the law of “insurance bad faith,” and the representation of those policyholders whose insurance carriers have failed to abide by the coverage terms of their policies.Three of Colorado’s key appellate decisions acknowledged the duty of insurance companies to defend policyholders for environmental damage claims under business policies and declared their rights of recovery. These precedent-setting decisions have had a major impact on the availability of insurance coverage for all policyholders, not only in Colorado, but around the country.

Our insurance coverage attorneys are regularly called upon to advise other counsel seeking the firm’s particular insurance coverage expertise, including in-house corporate attorneys and general counsel, insurance defense lawyers, legislators considering new laws, city and county attorneys, environmental attorneys, and general practitioners representing businesses and individuals. We are regularly called upon to represent out-of-state clients because of our unique experience, and we serve as counsel for a wide variety of public entities and private companies, including agricultural products companies, aircraft manufacturers, cities and counties, commercial landlords, construction companies, dry cleaners, environmental consulting firms, lenders, mining companies, real estate developers, ski area owners, wastewater treatment plants, and water and sanitation districts.

In Colorado the liquor industry is heavily regulated. The State of Colorado and local licensing authorities share responsibility for regulating the sale and service of alcoholic beverages. Local authorities (cities and counties) apply standards which are established by state statutes and regulations, but local licensing authorities have considerable latitude in reaching decisions. Neighborhood activism often exacerbates the uncertainty caused by the discretion afforded to local authorities.

Our liquor licensing practice focuses on all of the needs of liquor permit holders in Colorado from application and renewal to sale or transfer. Our clients include restaurants, hotels, bars, nightclubs, golf courses, developers, and other retail establishments selling alcohol, beer, wine, or liquor.

Our attorneys take care to demonstrate that all of the requirements for the issuance of the license have been satisfied, and to whatever extent possible, address concerns. Specific areas of our liquor licensing practice include:

Obtaining new liquor licenses

Negotiating contracts on behalf of buyers and sellers of business establishments

Preparing all documents related to a liquor license transfer

Representing clients in liquor license hearings

Appealing the denial of a liquor license transfer

Appealing the denial of a liquor license renewal

Appealing the denial of a liquor license issuance

Alterations of licensed premises

Zoning issues

Grimshaw & Harring lawyers also have the experience and expertise to advise liquor licensees concerning other legal issues directly related to their daily business.

Our attorneys have tried or settled dozens of cases involving Denver International Airport (DIA), E-470 Public Highway Authority’s toll road around Denver, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s project to expand Interstate 25 (T-REX), and various FasTracks projects. We have also completed various urban renewal projects in which we represented private landowners. We have handled many of Colorado’s significant public improvement projects, dating back to the acquisition of rights of way for Colorado’s major interstate highways. We also have handled acquisitions for open space, recreation, drainage improvement projects, water pipelines, city halls, roadways, schools, and even a county jail.

Our eminent domain practice also includes appellate work - we have significant experience in both the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court. Our lawyers are also frequent lecturers at continuing legal education seminars as well as conferences and seminars relating to land use, planning, trial techniques and appraisal methodology.

Mr. Schroeder represents both public and private sector clients in water, eminent domain, environmental and land use law and litigation. He has negotiated and closed dozens of transactions involving the sale of water rights, and he has settled or tried hundreds of cases in eminent domain, water, environmental and land use, including 42 U.S.C. §1983. Mr. Schroeder has offered argument over seventy times in his appellate practice, primarily in his listed areas of practice, and has represented businesses in hazardous waste cleanup litigation. Many of these cases established new principles that have become part of Colorado law. He has also published numerous articles and practice manual chapters and lectured in those areas of practice, and he continues to provide the Colorado update to 6 R. Clark, Waters and Water Rights 61. In addition to his admission to the Colorado bar in 1968, Mr. Schroeder is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

So long as an increased risk of harm develops from the unchecked growth of cancer [even though the risk is unlikely to materialize], medical malpractice plaintiffs in Colorado have a cause of action for emotional distress resulting from a delayed diagnosis. This article examines the recent opinion of the Colorado Supreme Court in Boryla v.
